What Is $mart Indiana?

$mart Indiana is a project of the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE). The goal is to promote and enhance the learning opportunities in personal finance for youth in both formal and informal education. This project provides the support and resources including professional development for teachers, educators and other youth outreach providers in the area of financial literacy.

Teachers at Indiana schools - $85 for both days or $75 for one day
Out of state - $150 for both days or $125 for one day

The $mart Indiana Economic Education and Financial Literacy Conference will feature a diverse selection of professional development workshops on economic and financial education topics suitable for elementary, middle and high school levels. Attendees of the conference will learn about effective teaching methods, best practices, curriculum integration strategies, and instructional resources. In addition to the workshops, outstanding speakers address current economic and financial topics to enable educators to bring these perspectives back to their classrooms.

Sessions include economic and finance education topics found in the Indiana Academic Standards in Social Studies, Economics, Business, Family and Consumer Science. Sessions will also highlight ways to integrate and use these concepts to enhance instruction in other language arts, mathematics and other college and career ready subject areas. There will be sessions for teachers at all levels: Elementary, Middle and High School Grades! Presenters include national and state award winning classroom teachers, faculty and economics educators from universities around the state of Indiana and the Federal Reserve Bank as well as a few special invited guests.

It does not matter if you have never had a class in economics or personal finance OR you teach AP or dual credit courses, there is a session for you! PLUS! All attendees will receive copies of ready to implement classroom lessons at EVERY Session.

Professional Development Programs for K-12 Teachers

Meeting the professional development needs of K-12 teachers and youth educators across Indiana is a primary focus of $mart Indiana. ICEE's programs provide teachers with the content knowledge, teaching strategies, exemplary materials, and assessments to implement concepts into their existing instruction and ensure that they are aligned with academic standards and other instructional mandates. Student Competitions

The Personal Finance Challenge is a competition that tests students’ knowledge on earning, protecting, and insuring income; using credit; buying goods and services; saving and financial investing.  The test takes place online and each team has a specified time limit to complete the test.  By competing in the Personal Finance Challenge, students have the opportunity to improve their understanding of economic and financial literacy concepts that will serve them well as adults.  The program is offered in the spring semester to high school students. See

2018 Winners!

The Stock Market Program is a simulation where students (grades 4-12) “invest” $100,000 in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and manage a portfolio for 10 weeks. The simulation can help introduce students to the basics of saving and investing, while helping them learn about the role of financial markets in the economy. See
