Take Stock in Indiana

An investor education program presented by The Indiana Council for Economic Education

Give your students a Competitive Financial Advantage

The Indiana Council for Economic Education pleased to announce Take Stock In Indiana, a new professional development program for middle school and high school teachers in Indiana.

Take Stock in Indiana provides teachers with standards-based instruction and classroom materials developed by the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) to teach students the importance of saving and investing.

With this comprehensive investment education curriculum, you will introduce your students to the ins-and-outs of long-term investing. They will take a critical look at investment opportunities – mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and more – and uncover long-term strategies for building lasting wealth.

Why is investor education important?

Americans and Hoosiers are becoming more responsible than ever for their own financial future. Today, half of all American households are directly responsible for managing the investments for their retirement. Unfortunately, many lack the basic knowledge to understand investment choices and make informed investing decisions.

Take Stock in Indiana objectives:

  • Develop and improve the skills and knowledge students will need to make informed investment decisions
  • Provide an opportunity for students to practice investment strategies
  • Provide teachers with standards-based curriculum materials

Through the integration of investor education, students:

  • Learn the value of personal saving and investing in planning for the future.
  • Learn about the financial and economic system of the United States.
  • Study current events to analyze how they affect financial and economic decisions.
  • Apply sound investment principles to avoid investment “scams.”
  • Learn how to gather information from newspapers and on-line sources.
  • Develop skills necessary for working in groups.
  • Apply skills learned in other subject areas, such as math and language arts.

Take Stock in Indiana Initiatives

FREE workshops and in-services for teachers
featuring NCEE's Learning, Earning and Investing curriculum

Why is investing important? What investment options are there? How does an individual make wise investing decisions? Topics such as these will be covered in standards-based training sessions. Teachers will learn strategies to introduce students to the building blocks of wealth and help connect economics, mathematics, and personal finance with easy-to-understand lessons. The materials provided are a great tool for tackling the stock market and for helping students become savvy in the ins-and-outs of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Contact Jeff Sanson at 800-790-6640 or jjsanson@purdue.edu to schedule an in-service.

The Learning, Earning and Investing (http://lei.ncee.net) curriculum is free to teachers who attend a Take Stock in Indiana workshop or school in-service.

Investor Education Posters are just what teachers need to help students become better savers and investors. The three large colorful posters illustrate fundamental principles of sound money management. Topics include: The Power of Compound Interest, Financial Planning Pyramid, and Watch Out for Investment Scams. A teacher’s guide accompanies the posters.

Every middle and high school in Indiana receives a set of posters to kick off Take Stock in Indiana!
