June 12 - June 22 Teaching Economics in Literature, Drama, Children's Literature & Art
Purdue University, West Lafayette
Elementary and Secondary Teachers and Administrators:

The workshop will focus on using literature, drama, children's literature, and art to teach economics, and on how English, language arts, and art teachers can use passages dealing with economics to enhance those courses and classes. The workshop will be developed with simulations, reader's theatre, role play, improvisations, and by using passages from literature, drama, children's literature, and paintings and drawings. A curriculum unit is required, focusing on how participants plan to teach economics using literature, drama, children's literature, or art. A group project and pre- and post-tests will be completed during the workshop.

Speakers include Michael Watts, Professor of Economics at Purdue University, presenting The Literary Books of Economics, "Oh, the Economics You'll Find in Dr. Seuss," and paintings and drawings; Mary Suiter, Manager, Economic Education at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, presenting on-line economics in literature lessons from the Federal Reserve; and Mary Sturgeon and Callie Marksbary, teachers at Sunnyside and Vinton Elementary Schools in Lafayette, IN, presenting Teaching Economics Using Children's Literature.

No formal background in economics is assumed of participants, and no one should refrain from applying because they fear that the material covered in the workshop will be too difficult. A $50 registration fee and application are due by May 25. Registration is limited to first 40 applicants.
